How to Disable or Turn off and Enable Notification Sound When Chat in Gmail or Google Talk? If you frequently chat with your friends using Gmail chat, I’m sure there would have been times you might have definitely thought you would be better off disabling the notification sounds or alerts whenever a new chat message arrives for various reasons. We can draw many cases so as to why someone would want to turn off or mute these sounds in Gmail chat, but then at the end of the day we would just like to be have a choice. Follow the below steps to disable the sound notifications for chat in Gmail.

1. Login to you Gmail account, continue by clicking on the small gear shaped icon on the right top corner of the window and select Mail settings.

2. In the settings page, in the main menu click on Chat.

3. Now you are in the chat settings section. Continue to the pen-ultimate option, Sounds, which is the one we are looking for, the one which will disable/turn off the sound notifications on the Gmail Chat. So just select the Sounds off option and click the Save Changes button (see the picture below).

This is all what you have to do in order to disable the notification sound in your Gmail Chat box. However, if you want to enable the sound notification just follow the same steps and on the chat settings section just select the Sounds on option.
